Networking Events and Joining a Gym: Why the Hardest Part Is Just Showing Up

Ever feel that wave of anxiety before stepping into a networking event? You’re not alone.

The nervous energy, the fear of awkward small talk, the pressure to present yourself confidently-it’s uncomfortable, even intimidating. And yet, you go. Because deep down, you know it’s important for your career and personal growth.

Walking into a gym for the first time feels exactly the same.

At Pherform, we see this parallel every day. Women tell us they’ve put off joining a gym for months, or even years, because she didn’t want to feel out of place. She was scared of not knowing what to do. She worried everyone else would be fitter, stronger, more experienced.

But she came anyway. And she stayed because she felt seen, supported, and coached…and without judgment.

We Know Trying Something New Is Hard

That’s why last week we hosted Bring a Friend Week.

Because we get it.

We know that trying something new especially when it comes to fitness can feel overwhelming. But walking into a new space is a lot easier when you’ve got someone by your side. Someone who’s already familiar with the environment. Someone who can say, “You’ve got this. I’ll be right next to you.”

It’s the same way you might invite a friend or coworker to a networking event because you know how much more approachable it feels when you’re not going it alone.

Why the Gym Is a Lot Like a Networking Event

1. You feel exposed.
Whether it’s introducing yourself to strangers or trying your first sled push, there's a vulnerability that comes with putting yourself out there.

2. You're not sure if you belong.
It’s easy to think, “I’m not fit enough for this class” or “I’m not confident enough to be in this room.”

But belonging isn’t about being the best; it’s about being willing to show up.

3. You leave better than when you walked in.
Whether you build a new connection or crush your first pull-up, you walk out stronger, prouder, and more confident than before.

What Makes Pherform Different

At Pherform, we train for women.

Our training is female-specific, our coaches are hands-on, and our community is unmatched. We celebrate effort, support progress, and never expect you to have it all figured out. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.

And for anyone who’s been on the fence about getting started, we’ll keep creating opportunities like Bring a Friend Week because courage is contagious. Sometimes all it takes is a familiar face to give you the push you need.

The Takeaway

Whether it’s for your health or your career, success doesn’t come from sitting on the sidelines.

It comes from showing up nerves and all.

From taking a chance on yourself.
From being willing to grow, even when it feels scary.

So the next time you hesitate to walk into a room be it a gym or a networking event remember:
The hardest part is getting through the door.
We’ll meet you on the other side.
